2 Reviews of the Rock 2

We’ve had this tent for a few years now and been really happy with it. Whilst it’s not perfect, it’s never let us down in bad weather which is hugely important. It’s also fairly warm, which is probably due to it being small – even in cold weather it never seems to be too cold inside. It doesn’t weigh much, packs away pretty small and is really quick to put up and take down, so is great for lightweight camping, as well as weekend trips where we want to get set up quickly.

Only a couple of things we aren’t too keen on: we don't find it v easy to cook in the porch in wet weather, it pitches inner first so not ideal if it’s chucking down (but we knew that before we bought it), and the groundsheet tends to get slightly damp if it’s raining or if there’s a heavy dew, though we’ve recently bought the separate footprint which helps.

After long and exhaustive research as to the best tent for my needs/budget, I narrowed it down to 2 tents, this 1 and the Tadpole 23. The Rock 22 ticked more boxes, especially the most important 1 of all, porch size.

First impression of the pack size was, its a little bit big. This was down to the tent not being packed efficiently (second hand ebay £80!). I weighed the whole pack and it came in at 2.35kg. Setting up is easy but would you need instructions if you had never erected a North Face tent before. It is an inner pitch first which could be a problem if it is pouring down with rain. The poles are very light and strong and look cool in metalic gold. The fly is two tone, mine is the green/light green version. The pegs are standard size and do the job, but I would try out different types to see which suit your needs.

Getting the tent from the bag to erect takes me (not rushing), around 3-5 minutes. Then its a case of lifting the whole thing so as to be side on to the wind and faffing with the pegs ( I do like the guys all tensioned the same). If the wind changes direction it is very easy to re-position the whole thing by just pulling up the pegs and moving the tent around.

Once the tent is up I like to get everything inside. I cycle/camp so I remove the wheels and seat/seat post off the bike and store the wheels in 1 porch and the frame in the other (night time). This is amazing and this is why the most important aspect of this tent was the porch size. The interior is standard layout, nothing special. It has the usual round doors, double zips and 4 mesh pockets. Floor space is good, you will easily get 2 full length mats with a foot or so of extra space at the top or bottom. It has loops in the attic area to attach the gear-loft shelf if you have 1, and 1 loop hanging from the top of the attic for a lantern (battery of course!). The doors are half no-see-um mesh and a couple of no-see-um mesh panels in the inner as well for extra ventilation. One little bonus is that you can have the outer door top slightly open and vent out any excess heat moisture and still feel cosy inside.

Packing the tent away is even quicker, you could get it all in the bag (stuff sack style) within 2 minutes easily.

Get the fly treated with an anti-bead solution from nikwax TX wash-in and just 1 shake of the fly removes 99% of water for quick and easy packing away.

This tent is great for 2 persons but I use mine for myself and my son (3 years old) on Dad+Son weekends. It is designed for the USA market and as such it is better for summer than winter, but it will be able to take a snow storm easily as The North Face over engineer everything I have ever used.

There are lighter tents and cheaper ones out there but it is going to be hard for me to find a better match for my needs. Many people do not consider there needs first and buy in haste. If you take your time and draw up two lists (+ and -), you might find the tent best for your needs is the one you did not consider.
